Hi Antonio,

Observatory 1.6.7 has just been released. It fixes the overlay issue with images that were plate solved with PixInsight. It also flips the solution, so there's no need to flip the image.

Changing the orientation of the images is not part of this update.

I'm trying with a regular mouse with 3 buttons and it zooms using Option key adding 10% in every middle button's turn. More levels than the Magic Mouse for sure. Not the dynamic zoom I was suggesting, but closer. Also trying with the MacBook Pro trackpad and the zoom have more levels too. So it seems the Magic Mouse is the less compatible option here.

Thank you for your fast replay.

At least with the Apple Magic Mouse and macOS Ventura, the behavior when scrolling with the "middle" gesture is panning the image, not zooming. If I use the Option key it zooms in and out with the "middle" gesture but it jumps from 50% to 6% or even 100% to 6%, no other levels in the middle. That's why I said that a softer dynamic zoom would be nice. I would like to show you and example with Apple Motion, but any file I could create is bigger than the attachment limit.

You should be able to zoom in/out to any scale with the zoom gesture and mouse scroll wheel. If that doesn't work for you, please check your Mouse & Trackpad System Preferences/Settings.

Wish List / Set of Overlays
Last post by avalondria2050 - January 09, 2023, 01:05:19 PM
Hi.

It would be a nice addition to create sets of overlays to be applied at the same time. Right now we have Show All Overlays, but the Tycho-2 and the Stars options sometimes covers the whole image. And yes, we can apply one by one, but that's tedious. It would be great to apply a selection of overlays we choose at the same time avoiding the others. Also the option to keep them applied between sessions would be great ( right now we have to apply them every time we enter to a new session ).

Thank you

Wish List / Scaling the thumbnails bar in ...
Last post by avalondria2050 - January 09, 2023, 12:53:47 PM
Hi.

It would be great if the upper bar over the thumbnails in the "Browser and Editor" view could be moved up and down, scaling the thumbnails at the same time. When the thumbnails are scaled with the slider, half of the image appears off the interface. So moving and scaling at the same time with the upper bar would be helpful. Similar behavior that you get with the side bars for the panels, but with scaling.

Talking about scaling, it would be great to have dynamic scale with the mouse in the preview area. Right now the scale jumps in too much and sometimes you want something in the middle ( not 10,25,50 or 100 but 40,68 or 80 percent ). Something just like the dynamic scale in Apple Motion using a shortcut combine with the mouse would be nice addition.

Thank you

Hi, Sander.

Yes, this workaround works.

I already have to flip all my images coming from PixInsight, and it takes longer to load/render them when I have Flip applied, compared to an image without it. I'm using a Mac Studio Pro with a M1 Pro Max and 64GB RAM, so I think it should be capable to render the image faster after applying Flip. It would be even better if you could establish the right orientation for these images coming from PI by default to avoid flipping all the pics, as I have read that I'm not the only one with this situation.

Thank you

Hi Antonio,

I have replicated the problem with one of my images. The following workaround worked for me:

  • In PixInsight after plate solving, with the FITSHeader process, remove keywords PV1_1 and PV1_2.
  • Then after importing the image into Observatory, flip it with the Flip adjustment.

I'll include a fix for the first issue in the next release. Flipping the image will then still be necessary.

General Discussion / PixInsight Solving Data Out of...
Last post by avalondria2050 - January 07, 2023, 10:29:49 PM
Hi.
I know somebody reported this issue a while ago, but it seems to remain in the latest Observatory versions.

I am able to solve my images with PixInsight without any problem, but I can't do the same with both Observatory or astrometry.net. I don't know if it's because of the wide field or related to any other aspect of my images. I had to update PixInsight to Gaia EDR3 catalog a while ago to make it works with the most challenging images. And it does perfectly well.

The issue comes when I import that data into Observatory. As another user reported a while ago, Observatory shows the labels in an incorrect position. And yes, I export always in .XISF with the FITS Header Keywords enable, so that's not the issue.

I'm a new user, bought Observatory just today and I find this problem quite annoying.

Any possible solution to this? Can you check this for the next release?

Thank you

Best

Antonio

Edited: I have seen that pixel scale and FOV shows an absurd data that might be the origin of this problem.
