General Discussion / Termination Reason: Namespa...
Last post by Tailspin45 - February 28, 2024, 06:51:17 PM
Spent the day trying to populate a new library without success thanks to frequent crashes or hangs.

I successfully loaded my data collected to date into a 2024 library, but when I tried to load my 2023 data in a different library, Observatory crashed when I tried to drop the whole folder (1.25Tb).

I tried loading a dozen or so dates at a time and got through November, but even loading one session at a time the program crashes...but not always. Import doesn't work at all, simply ignored.

(There are 100Gb free on the internal SSD.)

The crash reports indicates Termination Reason: Namespace SIGNAL, Code 6 Abort trap: 6.

I've restarted the program several times, of course, and tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail.

These three look normal to me in Quick Look, the same as when they are debayered in Observatory. This is on an 2013 15" Intel MacBook Pro with macOS Big Sur. How do they look to you?

I know the QuickLook extension isn't for JPEGs and TIFFs, but they nevertheless have colored thumbnails.  I attached those screengrabs because I can't attach FITs files here, as you know.

Dropbox has three FITs files that have colored thumbnails but otherwisse seem completely normal.

Update: Frank has contacted the Tycho developer. The application has been updated and now uses the correct FITS identifier, resolving the problem for Observatory and other software.

Observatory's QuickLook plugin isn't used for JPEGs and TIFFs. It is only used for FITS, XISF and SBIG images.

When you get it to work, please share a few of your images with Google Drive, or using iCloud.

Sorry for slow reply. Forgot to set alert.

Colorful thumbs happens to Light subs, too. JPEGs and TIFs.

When I get Google to cooperate I send a link to some of the FITS files

What a nice colorful set of thumbnails  :)

Right now the quick look plugin debayers the images if it detects a bayer pattern in the header, regardless the image type. It would indeed be better to not do that for calibration images. I'll change that.

Please share a few of these colorful bias images so I can investigate why each of them is depicted with such a different color?

Pretty Christmas tree light thumbnail colors, but these bias frames from an ASI533MC are actually monochrome.

I restarted Finder and trashed the cache using Terminal, but they still are incorrectly depicted as colorful frames.

Fix?

I downloaded Tycho and looked at its internal Info.plist and see that it is most likely to blame.

Whereas Observatory correctly describes the FITS file format with its gov.nasa.gsfc.fits identifier, its correct URL, "conforms to" types and mime type, Tycho claims it as its own file format (com.tycho-tracker.fits), and with a URL that points to the wikipedia FITS page. Tycho also sets itself up as an "editor" of FITS files, and so macOS gives it a higher priority over Observatory (it sets itself up as a "viewer"). Since Tycho uses the wrong identifier, Observatory looses access to FITS files.

So, remove Tycho or contact its author to have its FITS definitions fixed so it plays nice with other macOS astronomy software.

Enjoy the holidays!

Thanks Sander,

I've of course been thinking there is a system problem, not an Observatory problem.  LaunchServices does indeed seem the most likely culprit.  I've run the -h option, followed by the "-kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user" command that brings the functionality back.  I think I'm going to have to leave it at that until after some Christmas travel.

If you review thew first line of my initial post, you'll see Observatory is the default app for FITS files.  Though that was not the case before tunneling down the rabbit hole prior to hitting bottom and posting here.  Of note, I think Tycho (Tycho-Tracker.com) was the default at that time, and still shows as the only other 'Open With' selection once rebooting.  It's gone now that I've issued the 'make it better until reboot' command.  I think FITS Quick Look was broken before my Tycho investigations, but if you have a test machine it might be informative to load Tycho up to see what happens.

Once back from travel in the New Year, I'll perhaps issue the LaunchServices -delete command, but first verify rebooting reinstates the problem.

I hope your Holidays are merry, and thanks for your well appreciated help today and in past times.

    -Frank
